While Lettr Dating has launched and members can login and fill out their profiles, I have decided not to open up explore and communication until we have 100 members who have logged in and filled out their profile.
As incredible as I know Lettr to be, let's be real: a dating platform with 10 members isn't very useful. So rather than proudly claim "we're launched!" and have members create their profile only to see 5 others who match their preferences, I would rather build some buzz up, treating launch like a crowdfunding campaign with a goal and supporters who want to get to that goal. As such, I've changed the home page to emphasize that
I want to be clear: if we were to turn on search and communication right now, Lettr Dating would work exactly like it does in demos and I will turn it on the moment we have 100 members. But a dating platform is as much about the social aspect as it is the technology. The chicken/egg problem is the hardest thing to overcome on consumer platforms and many companies go bankrupt growing through false economics. People don't think it can be done without millions of dollars or some viral trick. I don't buy into that. It's hard, but not impossible, and we will do this the right way.
On our part, this is what we're going to be working on while concurrently drumming up buzz to get to 100 members
- Get the Lettr Dating iOS app approved in the App Store
- Get the Lettr Dating Android app approved in the Play Store
- Tweak digital advertising so that the pipeline from Ad -> Application -> Membership is tight
- Design and develop flyers, stickers, and merch to hand out IRL in NYC
- Contact and partner with existing IRL dating events in NYC to join our referral program/get a shout-out on their social media/mailing lists
While I personally believe Lettr as a web app is so useful, many of you want the mobile apps, and when we announced the iOS I got a big uptick in email signups. The validation of being on the App Store/Play Store. That credibility is huge because there are so many scammy dating apps out there
Anyway, I will make this blog a living document and update it. If you would like to help out in any way or have any advice or feedback for us as we get off the ground, let us know. You can contact us at [email protected]
